I highly recommend Grandfather's Journey by Allen Say for several compelling reasons.
First and foremost, the book beautifully explores themes of family, identity, and the immigrant experience. Through the eyes of a young boy reflecting on his grandfather's journey from Japan to America, readers are invited to consider the complexities of belonging and the pull of one's homeland. Say masterfully captures the emotional weight of nostalgia and the duality of living between two cultures, making it relatable to anyone who has experienced similar feelings of displacement or connection to their roots.
The illustrations are another standout feature. Say’s artwork is both poignant and evocative, complementing the narrative in a way that enhances the overall experience. Each page is filled with detailed images that reflect the beauty of both Japan and America, helping to immerse readers in the grandfather’s journey and emotions.
Additionally, the book is accessible to readers of all ages. Its straightforward yet profound storytelling makes it a great choice for children while also resonating deeply with adults. This timeless quality allows it to be a cherished read for families, promoting meaningful conversations about heritage and the stories that shape us.
Lastly, Grandfather's Journey serves as a reminder of the importance of remembering and honoring our family histories. It encourages readers to reflect on their own journeys and the stories passed down through generations, fostering a greater appreciation for the diverse experiences that shape our world.

This tells the beginning of the WWII through a teenage girl's perspective. I also like it that we will see how she grows up. It brings up a lot of moral questions, too of the time, which makes me think as well. The writer is really famous (as famous as Magda Szabó) and has several translations of her books in English. :-)
During the class /campaign, I could also introduce the Hungarian traditional teenage books. It's almost like 'Penguin' but we had striped and dotted covers and they were divided by topics / age level. :-)

As well as being an excellent resource for studying high level English, the words of the great Marcus Aurelius serve as a profound guide to dealing with all of the challenges we face in life.
