Tip for Pronouncing "R"

Mar 29, 2019

Japanese speakers in particular have a hard time with making the "r" sound. While it's not easy to make this sound if you are not used to it, it's not impossible.

Of course, you know that the "R" sound is similar to the "L" sound. But actually, there are two "L" sounds in English. The first "L" sound is heard at the beginning of words. You can make it by placing the tip/end of your tongue behind your top teeth.

The second "L" comes in the middle or at the end of words. To make this sound, your tongue touches a little farther back in your mouth.

The "R" sound is similar to the second "L" sound. However, you must make sure that your tongue does not touch the top of your mouth!

So, the next time you try to say a word with an "R" in it, try not to let your tongue touch the top of your mouth. It will feel unnatural at first, but eventually you will get used to it.

Want to practice this with me? No problem! Right now, I don't mind working on pronunciation during my free conversation classes. I'm also thinking of providing pronunciation lessons in the future.
