"GDP growth smashed expectations at the beginning of 2019. But economists say the upswing probably won't last."

Contrary to popular belief, it is not bad grammar to start a sentence with the word "But". It is not considered, however, indicative of a high level of written English. What three letter word could replace "But" in the above sentence and would give the same meaning but raise the level of written English?
