#2 What's Pitch Accent?

2019년 9월 5일

Hello, it’s Masami.
.
One of features in my lesson One Sentence A Day is to focus on pitch accent.
.
Although you may know, Japanese uses syllabary instead of alphabet.
.

.
Each Japanese letter either ひらがな(hiragana) or カタカナ(katakana) represents a beat of sound (except y-glides and long vowels).
.
A word is made up of some beats of sound, for example, あめ is written with 2 letters that take two beats.

.
And each component is pronounced with either a high or low pitch.
あめ can be pronounced in two ways:

or

.
However, those meanings are different.

(you can check the accent at https://ja.forvo.com/word/飴/#ja )
.

(you can check the accent at https://ja.forvo.com/word/雨/#ja )
.
.
Japanese people will understand even if accent is messed up, but you may be concerned about pronunciation as your study goes.
.
One Sentence A Day will help you establish foundation for your creative development.
