Ace your job or university interview!! Part 7

2020年8月14日

Hi, over the next few weeks I will be publishing regular advice on how to ace your job / university / MBA, or PhD interview. If you would like to book a lesson with me, I will provide you with a 28 page document that I have written with some sample questions and advice on how to answer them. In these articles that I am publishing, you will find a group of questions and the appropriate advice on how to answer them, and in some cases you will even find some sample answers. During a lesson, I will go through the questions with you, let you answer as if you were in an interview environment and then I will check, and if necessary, correct the content of your answer. I hope you find the following information useful and I really look forward to seeing you online if you choose a class with me! I am also offering a 20% discount for any new students for ANY of my lessons.

·       How will your greatest strength help you to perform?

Using the answer above, apply this strength(s) to the job you are applying for and explain how it will benefit you in doing this job.

·       How would you describe yourself?

Think of positive adjectives that you can use to describe yourself, for example: tenacious, honest, reliable, trustworthy, hard-working, helpful, approachable, intelligent, etc…. Try to use the adjectives that apply to the attributes that are required of you in the position you are applying for. Do not be afraid to boast a little and use specific examples.

·       Describe a typical work week.

Try to give a break-down of a typical working week in your previous/current job. Focus on projects, teamwork, important meetings, report writing, and senior responsibilities. If every day is different due to the nature of your work, try to state regular activities with a corresponding frequency ie: monthly, bi-monthly.

·       Describe your work style.

The interviewer wants to measure your efficiency in the workplace, try to use an example of some project that you were part of where there was a strict deadline and describe how you used the time and what steps you took in the project, for example: planning stage, ‘hands on’ time, checking your work for errors etc…

·       Do you consider yourself to be organized? Do you manage your time well?

The interviewer wants to hear about your work skills concerning time and task management, not that you have neatly separated the paperclips in your desk drawer into different trays based on size.  A model answer might be “I manage my time very well. I routinely complete tasks ahead of schedule. For example, . . . “ (offer the interviewer proof of your organizational skills by telling him about a major project that you organized and completed on time or mention the fact that you consistently received an outstanding grade in your previous performance reviews regarding your time management). Do not reveal to the interviewer that you are habitually late or that you complete tasks at the very last minute.
