Ace your job or university interview!! Part 28

2020年9月22日

Hi, over the next few weeks I will be publishing regular advice on how to ace your job / university / MBA, or PhD interview. If you would like to book a lesson with me, I will provide you with a 28 page document that I have written with some sample questions and advice on how to answer them. In these articles that I am publishing, you will find a group of questions and the appropriate advice on how to answer them, and in some cases you will even find some sample answers. During a lesson, I will go through the questions with you, let you answer as if you were in an interview environment and then I will check, and if necessary, correct the content of your answer. I hope you find the following information useful and I really look forward to seeing you online if you choose a class with me! I am also offering a 20% discount for any new students for ANY of my lessons.

·          Why this country?

This question is only applicable to foreign students applying to an institution outside of their native country:

If you are applying to study in another country, there are several factors to take into account such as; cost of living, visa/entry requirements, healthcare insurance, language/cultural issues, and being away from close family and/or friends, etc… Try to explain that you have researched your target country thoroughly and that you are confident that you will be comfortable living and studying there. Try to mention any previous visits or short/long term stays in the country as previous experience would be a great advantage. Maybe you intend to find employment in that country after you graduate. Try to convince your interviewers that you like the culture and people in your chosen country and that you are fully committed to the course and can overcome any ‘culture shock’ that you may suffer.

·          What do you think should be added into our program’s curriculum?

This is a difficult question to answer without sounding critical or negative about your chosen course, so carefully consider the wording of your answer. Try to be creative and maybe ‘think outside’ the box in answering this question because this may impress your interviewers if you come up with something they may not have thought of themselves. You can compare the course content with any other courses you have researched, although, if you make this type of comparison, it is probably better to talk about a course from a higher ranked university than the one you are applying to now.

·          Which part of our program interests you the most?

This question will probably be asked to ascertain whether you have fully researched the course content. In every course, there are bound to be units or modules in which you are highly interested, and others in which you have less, little, or no interest in. When you choose a particular unit of the course that interests you, try to explain why, both from a personal point of view and from a future career perspective why you are looking forward to studying it and say how this will help you develop as a student and ultimately as a graduate when you start work.

·          Will you do any part-time jobs during the course of the studies?

The question is quite personal but your interviewer is only concerned with your personal wellbeing and performance as a student.

Nowadays, study and the costs of living are expensive. The interviewer will want to know that you will 1) be financially stable throughout the course and not suffer from any undue financial stress, and 2) that if you undertake some part-time employment to help to support yourself financially, that you will not be tired or distracted due to long working hours and additional stress.

·          You mentioned XXX in your personal statement. How did XXX …?

If you write something unusual or noteworthy in your personal statement, it is quite likely that you will be questioned on it, so do not write anything that is untrue or exaggerated. Be prepared to answer question on anything you write on your application form or personal statement.
