Ace your job or university interview!! Part 29

2020年9月24日

Hi, over the next few weeks I will be publishing regular advice on how to ace your job / university / MBA, or PhD interview. If you would like to book a lesson with me, I will provide you with a 28 page document that I have written with some sample questions and advice on how to answer them. In these articles that I am publishing, you will find a group of questions and the appropriate advice on how to answer them, and in some cases you will even find some sample answers. During a lesson, I will go through the questions with you, let you answer as if you were in an interview environment and then I will check, and if necessary, correct the content of your answer. I hope you find the following information useful and I really look forward to seeing you online if you choose a class with me! I am also offering a 20% discount for any new students for ANY of my lessons.

·          How will you pay for your tuition fee?

This question will probably only apply to foreign students, as the fee for foreign students in most countries is higher than for native students. This is quite a personal question and is NOT being asked because the university just wants their fee. The interviewer would like to be sure that you will not suffer from any financial stress while you are a student there as this can undermine your studies, cause you stress and therefore affect your academic performance. The university will want to know that students are financially stable and that they can concentrate fully on their studies without distraction.

·          How did you choose, and what was the topic for your dissertation?

Try to explain the reasoning behind the choice of your dissertation. Try to include any research that you carried out in the field that assisted you in choosing your dissertation title, what other choices you had, and why you chose this one. Try to mention the future social or economic benefits of your work, and of course, it is important to mention anything ground-breaking that you discovered or implemented during your studies or after you published your work.

·          Talk about your favourite book or one that you have read recently….

The answer to this question will give the interviewer an insight into your interests and level of intelligence. Do not mention anything that may be deemed controversial, i.e.: material that is related to extreme political views or controversial characters from history such as dictators or war criminals! Try to choose a title that reflects deep thought, compassion, and insight.

·          What other schools have you applied to, and why?

Be careful that you do not list six or seven other schools because this will not make the interviewer feel that you are particularly focused on entering his or her school / university. Of course, it is likely that you have applied to more than just one school but do not make the interviewer feel you have a ‘scatter-gun’ approach and you are trying to cover all of your bases. Maybe talk about one or two other places you have applied to that have equal rankings as this university and of course, do not mention that you have applied to study several different subjects!

  • How do you describe your leadership style?

It is best not to describe your leadership style as ‘authoritarian’ as this will be perceived as old-fashioned and not in line with modern management styles. You need to appear as a modern leader, in touch with the feelings of others, having a democratic style of leadership that does not alienate your subordinates, and an understanding of the variables that are present in the modern-day workplace.
