3 of My Favourite Films - 3 Films 3 Different Genres

Weekly Topic: What was your most memorable film?

I don't have an all time favourite film as my tastes change and I prefer watching different genres in different situations but I here are some of my favourite films.

1. Labybird (2017) Advanced Reading

This is a coming of age film about a teenage girl in the final year of high school before she leaves to go to college. The film concentrates on the relationships with her friends and family, especially her mother. I think the film is very relatable and expresses teenage emotions and angst well. Teenagers are not children but also not yet adults, they want freedom and independence but also lack the maturity to be able to cope with this. The main character is likeable but has a lot of flaws

coming of age - a genre of book or film that concentrates on the main character growing up
relatable - to make some feel they've experienced a similar thing
angst - an inexpressable fear or anger about the world
flaws - imperfections

2. Dunkirk (2017) Upper-Intermediate / Intermediate Reading

The first time I watched this I was living in Korea and I saw it at the IMAX. I was sat in the front row and the screen covered my entire field of vision. The film created the impression of being in a war, especially through the audio. It showed the horror and the desperation of war for the individuals involved rather than a country or army.

field of vision - what your eyes can see
audio - recorded sound
desperation - the loss of hope

3. Fantastic Mr Fox (2009) Pre-Intermediate Reading

I love the art and colours used in this film. The filming technique is called stop-motion since small figure are used and moved between each shot. The story in the film is simple but interesting. Also, I'm a fan of the soundtrack. It is adapted from a children's book written by Roald Dahl a British author.

technique - method / skill
shot - piece of film
soundtrack /OST - the music used in a film
adapted - changed
