  • Origin - This is from the 19th century from the USA.  It started as an instruction given to a carriage driver whose horses were going too fast. 
  • Actual Meaning - Wait and be patient or to slow down
  • Example -  Hold your horses! Why are we walking so fast?
Idiom Definition - This is an expression that cannot be taken literally. 
It has a different meaning than that used in the dictionary.
