Active listening and Effective communication

In active listening, one makes a conscious effort to listen to the speaker and understand the information that is being conveyed to the listener.

Not only does this require you to listen actively but also engage with the speaker by providing feedback or asking relevant questions. Remember - body language is important too. 

 Use nonverbal cues to demonstrate that you are listening or that you understand such as providing eye contact, giving a smile, nodding or simply saying words like “I see”, “I understand”

 

 

The following verbal cues then help to show that you were actively listening:

  • Ø  Questioning – asking questions not only reinforces your interest in what the speaker has said but increases your engagement in the conversation
  • Ø  Clarification – clarify what you did not understand or to confirm your understanding on a point the speaker has spoken about
