Maybe no country apart from Ukraine and Russia has been impacted by Putin's war more than Poland. Poland was home to 2 million Ukrainians before the war started and a further 2 million + Ukrainians fled to Poland after the war started. It's hard to say how many Ukrainians are in Poland now as there are many Ukrainian men who went back to Ukraine to fight or help. Everybody here knows somebody deeply affected by this senseless war.
When the refugees started flooding in many people in Warsaw did what they could to help. Just a 5-minute drive from where I live is the bus station that welcomed most of the refugees. In the first two months of the war we were cooking food and bringing it to the volunteers to serve to the refugees. I spoke to some of the refugees and they talked of 3-day treacherous journeys through the night. Their driver avoiding cities and towns and taking the long route to safety in order to avoid the bombs. Among them were elderly people who instead of enjoying their retirement years or the necessary help needed in hospitals had to flee for their lives.
Poles also helped by providing housing for the refugees, clothing, household essentials and car trips to where they needed to get. There is a feeling of 'told you so' among Poles as for years they had been warning Western Europe and America about the threat of Russia and now, sadly, they have been proven right.
Poland has also seen an increase in military strength with American and other allied troops coming to Poland to securee the border. When the war started there was a real sense that the war could spread to Poland although I've always thought that was very unlikely due to the security that NATO's defence supplies. We have also seen many world leaders visit Warsaw such as President Biden and Prime-minister Boris Johnson.
Recently, Russia cut off its gas supply to Poland as well as Bulgaria. The Polish government claim they were prepared for this and have enough in reserve as well as increasing supply from Norway. Poland didn't rely on Russian gas as much as countries like Germany that gets 40% of its gas from Russia.
Of course, this war is far from over and there's still a lot that needs to be done but the generosity people have shown has given me hope in humanity's future.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
