Something More Scary than when my Head was in a Puma's Mouth

Japanese Picture Diary・November 4, 2022

Firstly, I will explain why my head was inside a puma’s mouth.

I used to be a volunteer worker at a wildlife sanctuary. The wildlife sanctuary was mostly for rescued big cats, such as tigers, puma's, leopards, and more. My job was primarily to help feed them, give medicine, and clean their cages. It was sometimes a dangerous volunteer job, but I loved it.

There were a few exceptionally scary moments, such as the time the puma grabbed me with its strong arms while putting its mouth on the back of my head. I think it saw my long pulled-back hair, and thought it looked like a fun toy to attack.

There were also a couple times where tigers tried to swat at me with their big paws, or try to bite. Big-cat behavior is similar to house-cat behavior, but obviously, big cats have the potential to cause more accidental harm.

Since living in Japan, there are some things even more scary that I experienced though, such as purchasing my one-way ticket from the United States to Japan.

Although, sometimes I wonder if the time I went hiding under my desk during my first level 4 earthquake was more scary than the one-way ticket to the other side of the Pacific Ocean.

There was also the time I was nearly panicking while trying to open a Japanese bank account, since I had little experience with the Japanese language.

The bank account experience may even outweigh the experience of the big typhoon in 2019 when Tama River flooded and I was in a flooding-risk zone! Google Translate from Japanese to English said, “Leave to save your life” for the alert messages I was receiving.

Now, back to the story of coming to Japan.

Coming to Japan was my first time going to another country. I sold or let go of almost everything I owned, even my beloved acoustic piano. I bought a one-way ticket. I had a “going-away” party with family and friends in Seattle and San Jose, where I’m from. I picked up my visa from the Japanese consulate in San Francisco. Then not too long after, I boarded a plane with only a couple small carry-ons for Tokyo, Japan.

I have had many adventures and first-time experiences since then. I look forward to sharing more stories and adventures soon!
