Cafetalk Tutor's Column

Busy days

Nov 29, 2022

I’ve had several jobs in my life. I’ve been a tractor driver, an archaeologist, an illustrator, and more. And, of course, for the past 13 years, I’ve been an English teacher! However, until this week, I had never really worked in a retail environment.

My wife is the manager of a chocolate shop in the historic Distillery District of downtown Toronto. From mid-November until the end of December, this area transforms into a Christmas market with lots of lights, decorations, vendors, and, of course, a huge Christmas tree. During this time, tons of people visit to enjoy the atmosphere (even though everything is really expensive!) and the market gets really crowded.

Usually, I try to avoid busy places like that, but this year I’ve been roped into being a doorman at the chocolate shop in order to help control the crowds! It’s definitely a new experience for me, and I’ve been shocked by how busy it gets, but most people are in a good mood and happy to get some nice chocolate. Also, at least once a day, I get to see Santa and his elves as they walk around the market greeting guests and taking pictures with them.

So, now I teach in the mornings and evenings and work at the Christmas market during the day, which is why I’ve been so busy lately and also why my schedule here on Cafetalk has been reduced.

If you’re curious about the atmosphere at the market, here is a link to a walking tour video created by Johnny Strides on YouTube: Toronto Winter Village (Christmas Market) Walk 2022
