Understanding Gender Pronouns – He / She / Him / Her / His / Hers

Nouns

A noun is a word that refers to a thing, a person or a place. Some examples of nouns are as follows:

·        thing - car, book, table, house, road

·        person – woman, man, child, singer, farmer

·        place – Japan, city, Asia, beach, building

Below are sentences that have nouns.

  • I will use an aircraft to travel to Japan.
  • Hiroko is a teacher and a driver
  • The child crossed the river.

Pronouns

pronoun is a word that is used instead of a noun. Pronouns are used often to avoid repetition of the same noun in a sentence or phrase. A gender pronoun is one that a person chooses to use.

1.       He

This pronoun is used by someone who identifies as a male. A male can be described as a man or a boy.


 

§  Kenji is playing basketball. He is a good player.

 

In this sentence, we have avoided repeating Kenji’s name in the second sentence, and replaced it with the pronoun “he”. The pronoun “he” has been used instead of the noun Kenji.

 

§  Hiroto’s father is a musician. He performed at the Tokyo Dome yesterday.

 

The pronoun “he” is used to replace the noun Hiroto’s father.

 

2.      She

  This pronoun is used by someone who identifies as a female. A female can be described as a woman or a girl.


 

§ 

Yuri is a beautiful girl. 
She is wearing a yellow dress. 

In this sentence, we have avoided repeating the noun dog in the second sentence, and replaced it with the pronoun “she”. The pronoun “she” has been used instead of the noun dog.

§  This is my aunty. She is very tall.

            The pronoun “she” is used to replace the noun aunty.

 

3.      Him

 

This is a singular third-person pronoun used to refer to other people and things and is used to refer to males, men or boys.

 

§  Let us accept him for who he is.

 

§  I like him because he plays football well.

 

4.      Her

 

This is a singular third-person pronoun used to refer to other people and things and is used to refer to females, women or girls.

 

§  Those are her books.

 

§  It’s her turn to swim.

 

5.      His

 

            This pronoun is used to refer to a thing belonging to a male person, a boy or a man

 

§  He was left alone on his own

 

§  His mouth is full of food.

 

6.      Hers

 

This pronoun is used to refer to a thing belonging to a female, girl or woman.

 

§  This baby is hers.

 

§  His bed was above hers.
