If you are an ESL student in Japan, improving your English language skills is just one of the challenges you face. Another important aspect of becoming fluent in English is networking and building relationships. This is particularly important if you are hoping to work or study abroad, as a strong professional network can help you find job opportunities, scholarships, and internships.

Networking in English may seem intimidating at first, but it is a skill that can be learned and developed with practice. Here are some tips to help you make connections and build relationships in English.

1.  Attend events and meetups

Attending events and meetups is a great way to meet new people and expand your network. Look for events that are relevant to your interests or industry and attend them regularly. This will give you the opportunity to meet new people and build relationships with them over time.

2.  Start small talk

Small talk is an essential part of networking, as it allows you to build rapport with people and start conversations. Start by introducing yourself and asking simple questions, such as where the other person is from, what they do, or how they are enjoying the event. You can also comment on the event or location to break the ice.

3.  Be confident

Confidence is key when it comes to networking in English. Even if you are not yet fluent in the language, try to speak clearly and confidently. Avoid apologizing for your language skills or being overly self-conscious. Remember that everyone has to start somewhere, and people are generally understanding and supportive.

4.  Follow up

Following up after meeting someone is an important part of building relationships. Send a follow-up email or message thanking them for their time and expressing your interest in staying in touch. You can also connect with them on social media or LinkedIn to stay updated on their activities and interests.

5.  Practice your language skills

Finally, practicing your language skills is crucial for networking in English. Make an effort to read, write, and speak in English as much as possible. This will not only help you improve your language skills, but also give you more confidence when networking in English.

In conclusion, networking in English is an important skill for ESL students in Japan who want to build a strong professional network and pursue opportunities abroad. By attending events, starting small talk, being confident, following up, and practicing your language skills, you can improve your networking skills and build valuable relationships. Good luck!
