I've been on a lot of beach vacations, and so, I thought maybe I should try something different.

This was my second trip to Indonesia, however this is my first time to Jakarata, and Surabaya.

I recently decided to visit an active volcano because I wanted to see the inside of the volcano. The volcano I went to is called Mount Bromo in Indonesia. 

To get there, I flew to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. From Jakarta, I took another flight to Surabaya, the second largest city in the country.

In Surabaya, I used an app called GRAB, which is similar to UBER and popular in Southeast Asia, to get around the city.

Although there weren't many tourists in the city, I could find all the usual shops in the malls, like in most big cities.

To find places to eat, I used Google Maps and checked recent restaurant reviews to make sure they were real. When some menus didn't have English, I used Google to translate them.

When it was time for the trip, I had a driver who came at 1am and took me from the hotel, to the the town, which was close to the volcano.We traveled in a special Jeep on rough and windy roads with limited visibility. It felt like riding a dune buggy ( or bumpy car) on the moon.

Once we reached our destination, I had to walk to the top of a mountain to see a beautiful sunrise, including the smoking Mount Bromo.
 

After the sunrise, I returned to the Jeep and headed towards Mount Bromo. At one point, I had to walk for about 30 minutes, including climbing some steep steps, to reach the top of the volcano.

When I reached the edge of the crater and looked down, it was impressive. I could hear the sounds of the volcano and see the smoke. It was partly because I knew there was a possibility of an eruption and also because it felt like being in a deep part of nature, connected to the Earth.
