Sleep And Learning

Matthew Irwin

Lots of people have asked me how to learn a language better and my favorite thing to say is indirectly related to learning. "They're probably not sleeping 8 hours a night," I think to myself--"and their diet is poor." And they're not exercising. I think that this should be a module in language courses--Language Learning And Health. I have never had somebody who was asking for techniques to learn a language tell me that they were healthy. It has always been people who are sleep deprived like most of society and don't get exercise. Olives and olive oil are good for memory and a cup of coffee. You can build your memory specifically (I'll post a review of Joshua Foer's book below). You can also take a nap right after studying and study again when you wake up. Make sure you get 8 hours.
