The jacaranda trees are blooming in my town

Dr Grant

It is that time of year again. Every year in late October or early November, the jacaranda trees show a beautiful display of their purple ('mauve' is perhaps a better word) blossoms. Here are some of them in my street. Many of the blossoms have already fallen because it is raining.

Jacarandas are originally from South America. No-one is absolutely sure when they were imported to South Africa (my country) - but it was no later than the 1880s. Many South African towns and cities have these trees shading the sidewalks. Some people do not like them because they are not originally African, but no one can say that they are not beautiful at this time of year.
