Improving your Vocabulary for IELTS Speaking

Mark Feeley

Yesterday, I explained how I was an IELTS expert. However, if you are preparing for the IELTS speaking interview, what exactly do you have to do to achieve a high score, and how can you prepare? In this post, I will give you some hot tips on how to impress an examiner with your vocabulary.

A common topic in the IELTS speaking interview is to talk about a place. Look at the photograph below. This is from the Akigawa river, one of my favourite places in Japan. How would you describe this place? Compare the following short examples:

1. A place I love in Japan is the Akigawa river. I especially love Autumn when the leaves on the trees are changing colour.

2. A place I love in Japan is the Akigawa river. I especially love Autumn when the leaves are changing colour and you can see the amazing crimson leaves of the maple trees contrasted with the incredible gold leaves of the ginkgo trees. It is absolutely amazing.

In the second example, the speaker provides more details and uses a wider range of vocabulary, including some specific words, such as 'maple trees' and some less common words (crimson). The speaker also demonstrates an awareness of collocation (amazing crimson leaves / incredible gold leaves / absolutely amazing). As the speaker uses a range of adjectives, their voice will also sound more enthusiastic and it will be more interesting for the examiner.

To get a higher score in the IELTS exam, you need to develop your vocabulary on topics which are commonly used in the exam.

I can help you, using my own personalised materials and my coaching experience.

If you need an extra advantage to help you achieve your target score, please send me a message.

I look forward to helping you achieve your target score!!
