Every January, the question of New Year’s resolutions comes up: Should we make them, or are they just setting us up for failure?
For some, the idea of a fresh start in January is exciting, while others feel that resolutions often lead to unnecessary pressure.
Let’s explore this together!
Fresh Start or False Hope?
The charm of New Year’s resolutions lies in their promise of a fresh start. After all, who doesn’t love the idea of leaving old habits behind and stepping into a brighter, better version of ourselves?
Yet, many of us know the sinking feeling of giving up on a resolution by February or March. In fact, a study found that most people abandon their resolutions within the first six weeks.
So, why do we keep trying?
Resolutions tap into our hope for self-improvement, and even if they don’t always last, they give us a moment to pause and think about what we want to achieve.
What I’m Aiming for in 2025
This year, I’m trying something new: creating a vision board.
A vision board is a visual representation of your goals and aspirations, filled with images, words, or quotes that inspire you. It’s my first time trying it out, and I’m curious to see how it helps me stay focused on what truly matters throughout the year.
For me, the New Year is more about taking a moment to reflect and adjust rather than setting strict resolutions.
That’s why my vision for 2025 is all about focusing on small, meaningful goals that feel doable and can stick with me throughout the year.
Here are a few things I’m focusing on:
- Expanding Learning Opportunities: As a teacher, I want to bring fresh topics into my lessons. Keeping lessons engaging and fun is always a priority for me
- Staying Active: Instead of aiming for drastic fitness goals, I’m sticking to activities I enjoy and can do regularly, like yoga and walks. Consistency over perfection!
- Creativity Time: Writing, sketching, planning lessons, and exploring new content ideas are some of my creative outlets. I plan to dedicate more time to these this year
A More Flexible Way to Set Goals
If you’re like me and prefer a less pressured approach, here’s an idea: Rather than making strict resolutions, why not choose a theme or word for the year?
Words like “balance,” “focus,” "peace," or “growth” can guide your choices without feeling restrictive.
Another tip? Start small.
Instead of saying, “I’ll read 50 books this year,” commit to reading for 10 minutes a day.
Small steps often lead to big changes.
Why Setting Intentions Can Make a Difference
The New Year is a wonderful time to dream and plan, but it’s also a reminder to be kind to ourselves.
Whether you’re setting goals, choosing a word, or simply reflecting, what matters most is finding a way to keep growing that feels right for you.
As we step into 2025, I hope you feel inspired to embrace whatever approach works for you.
For me, it’s about moving forward with purpose and joy, one small step at a time.
