How to Offer to Help Politely in English

Vicky B

When was the last time you offered to help someone in English?
What did you say?

To learn more polite and natural ways of offering to help, check out this short guide below.

GENERAL PHRASES

Here are some general phrases you can use to offer to help someone in any situation:

- Can I help you?

- Do you need a hand?

- Do you need some help?

- Would you like some help?

- Would you like me to help you?

They are in order from less formal to more formal.

SPECIFIC PHRASES

Now we’ll look at how to offer to help someone with a specific task.

Imagine you see your coworker carrying a heavy box. They look like they’re having trouble. You can offer to help by saying:

- Can I carry that box?

- May I carry that box?

- Would you like me to carry that box?

They are in order from less formal to more formal.

INDIRECT WAYS OF OFFERING TO HELP

Sometimes you might want to offer to help more indirectly, to make the other person feel comfortable.

- I can carry that box (if you like).

- I’ll carry that box (if you like).

“If you like” makes the phrase softer.
