Dear students!

As some of you may know, from last september, I've embarked on a Master's in Applied Linguistics at Oxford.

It is a part-time masters, but I definitely got my behind kicked - it was a very steep learning curve.

On a metacognitive level, I've learned these things:

1. Active revision is very helpful. Try to test yourself instead of re-reading or highlighting things. Keep testing and checking your understanding. Try to work with a friend and test each other and play "teacher" where you teach each other.

2. Think outside the box. Looking at things through a different viewpoint will help you understand things better. Ask questions and try to imagine you were in the problem or situation that you are looking at.

3. Take breaks, and be kind to your body and soul. If you exercise, you will definitely do better than if you just sit all day (easier said than done, I know!)

4. Be critical! This is the biggest thing I've learned at Oxford. Don't just trust anything and everything you read and see online and in textbooks. Most often, textbooks have a "hidden curriculum" or one viewpoint of looking at things. They don't show you the millions of other viewpoints that are missing - so do some research and try to see if what you learned is really true everywhere.

Best of luck to all the students on their new term!

As for me, this post was my procrastination - I should get back to writing my essay on Hidden Curriculums!
