The Best Way to Take a Brain Break for Kids

Weekly Topic: Fun brain break ideas

Aspen Kumagai

When kids (or adults!) are learning, their brains work hard. But after a while, focus fades, and frustration can creep in. That’s where brain breaks come in — short, fun activities that give the brain time to rest and reset.

So, what’s the best way to take a brain break?

Move Your Body!

The most effective brain breaks involve movement. Getting up and moving boosts energy, improves mood, and helps the brain get ready to learn again.

Here are some quick and easy ideas:

  • Dance to one song  (any favorite will do!)

  • Do 10 jumping jacks

  • Walk around the room like an animal (try a bear, frog, or crab!)

  • Stretch and breathe – arms up, deep breath in… and out

Keep it Short

Just 5 minutes is enough. The goal is to feel refreshed — not tired or distracted.

When to Take a Break

  • After 20–30 minutes of focused work

  • When your child looks tired or frustrated

  • Between different subjects or tasks

A Happy Brain Learns Better

Brain breaks aren't just fun — they're smart! They help improve focus, reduce stress, and make learning feel easier.

So next time your child (or you!) feels stuck, take a break — and come back ready to learn.
