Today is Tanabata. It’s the struggles and hardships that make it a drama!

Tad Papa

Today is Tanabata!
It is the day when the two lovers, the stars Orihime and Hikoboshi, are allowed to cross the Milky Way and meet just once a year.

If they could meet every day whenever they wanted and were a perfectly happy couple, it wouldn’t make much of a drama, would it? ??
Samson and Delilah, Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights—all tragedies. Titanic too…
It seems that when it comes to romance, tragedy is what creates drama!

The Tanabata Story / Legend

Long, long ago, the Heavenly God had a daughter named Orihime.
She was very skilled at weaving and wove beautiful cloth every day, offering it to the gods.

The god was very proud of her, but when he noticed that she worked all the time and looked lonely, he decided to introduce her to a diligent young cowherd named Hikoboshi.

The two quickly fell in love and got married.

However—

After they married, they became so absorbed in each other that they completely stopped working.
Orihime no longer wove cloth, and Hikoboshi neglected his cows.

Angered by this, the god separated them, placing them on opposite sides of the Milky Way.

But seeing how sorrowfully they wept, the god finally said:

“If you work diligently, I will allow you to meet just once a year, on July 7.”

And so, from that time on, Orihime and Hikoboshi have been able to cross the Milky Way and reunite only once a year, on the night of Tanabata.
