みなさんは「お墓参り（おはかまいり）」という言葉（ことば）を知（し）っていますか。
Have you heard the word Ohakamairi (visiting graves) before?
「お墓参り」は、お盆（おぼん）のとき（8月13日～16日）に、自分（じぶん）の家（いえ）の先祖（せんぞ）のお墓（はか）に行（い）くことです。
It means going to your family’s ancestors’ graves during Obon.
お墓をきれいにしたり、手（て）を合（あ）わせてあいさつしたりします。
People clean the graves and put their hands together to greet or pray to their ancestors.
※「先祖」＝むかしの家族（かぞく）（おじいさんやおばあさん、そのもっと前（まえ）の人（ひと）たち）Ancestors means your family members from long ago, like grandparents and earlier generations.
お墓参りでは、「おそなえもの」をします。
During Ohakamairi, people make offerings at the grave.
「おそなえもの」は、お墓（はか）に置（お）くものです。
An offering is something you place at the grave.
たとえば――
For example:
①お線香（せんこう）をあげる
Light incense sticks
②お花（はな）をかざる
Decorate with flowers
③ろうそくに火（ひ）をつける
Light candles
④水（みず）をコップのようないれものに入（い）れて置（お）く
Place water in a cup-like container
⑤食べ物（たべもの）や飲み物（のみもの）を置（お）く
Offer food or drinks
おそなえものは、地域（ちいき）や家（いえ）によってちがいます。
These offerings are different depending on the region or family.
私（わたし）の家では、お墓の上（うえ）から水（みず）をかけます。
In my family, we pour water over the gravestone.
お墓をきれいにするためです。
We do this to clean the grave.
また、夏（なつ）はとてもあついので、お先祖様に「すずしい気（き）もちになってほしい」という意味（いみ）もあります。
Also, because summer is very hot, we want our ancestors to feel cool and refreshed.
わたしの家でよくおそなえするたべものを紹介（しょうかい）します。
I will introduce the foods we often offer in my family.
・煮しめ（にしめ）：にんじんやれんこん、こんにゃくなどのやさいを、だしであじをつけて、ながくにた料理（りょうり）
vegetables such as carrots, lotus root, and konnyaku simmered for a long time in a seasoned broth
・ゼリーのおかし：四角（しかく）のフルーツゼリー
Fruit jelly candies cut into squares
・砂糖菓子（さとうがし）：砂糖（さとう）でつくった、かたくて甘（あま）いおかし
Hard and sweet candies made from sugar
おかしはスーパーで買（か）えます。名前（なまえ）はわすれてしまいました（笑）
You can buy these sweets at supermarkets, though I’ve forgotten the name (haha).
どれもおいしいです。
They are all delicious.
おそなえした食べ物や飲み物は、そのままにしません。
We don’t leave the food or drinks at the grave.
カラスなどが食べてしまうからです。
This is because crows and other animals might eat them.
いちどおそなえしてから持ち帰って（もちかえって）、私たちが食べます。
We offer them first, then take them back home and eat them ourselves.
あなたの国（くに）にも、日本のお墓参りとにているしゅうかんはありますか。
