Beyond Beauty: Flowers and Their Hidden Stories

每週主題: What I'm into lately (unexpected hobbies?)

İrem Altan

Lately, I’ve found myself diving into something that even surprised me: researching flowers—especially those that symbolize death and remembrance in different cultures. ?? It might sound a little unusual, but it became such an unexpected hobby that I can’t stop reading about it.

For example, I learned that white chrysanthemums often carry the meaning of death and mourning in countries like Japan, Korea, and China. While in the West, chrysanthemums are usually seen as cheerful flowers, in East Asia they’re often placed at funerals or graves. This contrast fascinated me, because it shows how one flower can carry completely opposite feelings depending on where you are.

Another flower I’ve been curious about is the gerbera daisy. Normally, gerberas are known for their bright, happy colors. But in some cultures, certain colors of gerberas—like yellow—can be linked to sadness, remembrance, or even the concept of death. It’s so interesting to see how a flower that looks joyful can also hold a much deeper and heavier meaning.

In some traditions, yellow flowers in general can symbolize mourning and memory. What feels like “sunshine in a vase” for one culture may be a silent message of grief in another. That duality is exactly what keeps me researching more and more.

I think what makes this hobby unexpected is that when people hear “flowers,” they usually imagine beauty, love, and romance. But for me, flowers are also about hidden stories, symbolism, and how humans express emotions through nature. Every culture uses flowers as a language, and learning those meanings makes me feel like I’m decoding secret messages across the world. ??

So yes, my unexpected hobby is chasing the hidden meanings of flowers, especially those tied to death and remembrance. It might sound a little dark, but for me, it’s actually beautiful—because it shows how deeply connected humans are to nature when expressing feelings that words sometimes can’t.
