What I’m into lately (unexpected hobbies?)

The weather was beautiful on Monday (it had finally cooled down to about 20 degrees in Toronto), so I went for a walk with my wife. I had no idea at that time that we were actually going on an adventure!

After a 40-minute hike to the Evergreen Brick Works, an oasis of nature in the middle of Toronto, we decided that we wanted to visit a nearby park that we had not been to since 2020… except we took the wrong path!

Although we quickly realized we were in the wrong place, we were curious and decided to keep walking. Hiking deeper and deeper into the forest, we eventually came to an area where my wife noticed cicada husks clinging to the trees. At first, I couldn’t see them because I had no idea what to look for. I had only seen about half a dozen cicadas in my life, but as I learned to identify the shape of their husks, I began to notice them, too!

We found SO many cicada husks and also living cicadas, and I was fascinated by them, so we decided to start collecting the husks in a plastic container. I had no idea why I was collecting them or what I was going to do with them, but I was overcome by curiosity and wanted to find as many as possible.

The cicada husks led us further and further along the forest path, and eventually we realized that we had been hiking for over two hours and were very far away from home. At that point, we decided to stop collecting husks and try to figure out how to get home, which took another hour at least!

Collecting cicada husks made me feel like a little kid again, and though I’m not planning to make a hobby out of collecting bugs, I was really into it for one day, and it was only possible because we took a wrong turn! Now I just have to figure out what to do with all of these husks…

Wow, what an adventure! It’s amazing how a simple wrong turn turned into such a memorable day of discovery. I love how you described learning to spot the cicada husks — it shows how curiosity can open our eyes to details we might normally miss. It must have felt refreshing to reconnect with nature like that, and I can totally relate to the joy of feeling like a kid again. Thanks for sharing this story. It's a great reminder that sometimes the best experiences come from the unexpected!
