“もっと話したい”が語学を伸ばす・・・

外国語を学ぶとき、「もっと知りたい」と思えるきっかけや、「（海外に引っ越して/仕事で）必要に迫られて学ぶ状況」、あるいは「これはその言語で言いたい」と感じる気持ちがあると、自然に伸びやすいのではないかと感じています。
もちろん、テストのために勉強するのも悪くはありません。ただ、会話ができるようになると楽しさが増して、「もっと話したい」と思うようになり、自分から積極的に吸収できるようになると思います。

日本では、中学・高校だけでも6年間英語を学んでいますが（今は小学校から学びますね）、
実際に話せる人は少ないです。その理由の一つは、やはり「話す機会」がないからです。
外国語を学ぶモチベーションが高まるのは、ネイティブと話す楽しさを味わったときだと思います。
「もっと伝えたい」「もっと聞き取れるようになりたい」と思える瞬間に、
学ぶ意欲は大きく高まるのだと思います。

私自身、夫がカナダ人ですが、彼の家族との会話の中で文化の違いから冗談がまったく理解できず、辛く感じた時期がありました。
けれども、少しずつジョークやユーモアが理解できるようになってから、会話が楽しくなりました。
そして冗談を交わしたり、私が躊躇せず英語でたくさん話すようになると、
彼の家族もとても喜んでくれ、学んでよかったと心から思えるようになりました。

When learning a foreign language, I believe it grows most naturally when there is a spark—something that makes you think, “I want to know more,” or when you find yourself in a situation where you simply have to learn (such as moving abroad or using it for work), or when you feel “I want to express this in that language.”

Of course, studying for exams is not a bad thing either. But once you become able to have conversations, learning becomes more enjoyable, and you naturally start wanting to speak more and absorb more on your own.

In Japan, students study English for six years in junior high and high school alone (and now they start in elementary school), yet there are still few people who can actually speak it. One big reason is that there are hardly any opportunities to use it in real conversation. I believe that motivation for learning a foreign language really increases at the moment you experience the joy of speaking with native speakers. When you feel, “I want to say more” or “I want to understand better,” your drive to learn grows much stronger.

In my own case, my husband is Canadian, and there was a time when I struggled in conversations with his family because I couldn’t understand their jokes at all due to cultural differences. However, once I gradually began to understand jokes and humor, conversations became so much more enjoyable. And as I started exchanging jokes myself and speaking a lot of English without hesitation, I could see how genuinely happy his family was. That made me truly feel that learning the language had been worthwhile.
