Learn Japanese While Traveling — Kinosaki Onsen Edition

Hello everyone! I’m Shoko, a Japanese language teacher.
Today, I’d like to introduce you to Kinosaki Onsen, a beautiful hot spring town located in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.

Kinosaki Onsen is famous for its seven public hot springs (sotoyu).
You’ll see people strolling along willow-lined streets in yukata, hear the gentle sound of the river, and notice soft steam rising in the evening air.
It’s a place that feels peaceful, nostalgic, and deeply Japanese.

This town has also been loved by many famous writers such as Naoya Shiga and Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo).
It’s a place where literature and hot springs meet — and when you learn about that background, even a single Japanese word starts to carry a “cultural fragrance.”

こんにちは、日本語講師のShokoです。

今回は、兵庫県にある「城崎温泉（きのさきおんせん）」という美しい温泉の町をを紹介します！

城崎温泉は、7つの外湯（そとゆ）で有名な町です。
柳並木の通りを浴衣で歩く人々、川のせせらぎ、湯けむり…。どこか懐かしく、静かで落ち着いた日本の風景が広がっています。

実はこの町、志賀直哉（しがなおや）や小泉八雲（こいずみやくも／Lafcadio Hearn）といった有名な作家たちにも愛されてきました。文学と温泉が共存する場所なんです。
そんな背景を知ると、ひとつの日本語表現や言葉にも「文化の香り」を感じることができますよね。
