Stay Motivated with Small Wins 小さな成功でやる気を保とう：ナチュラルな英語のコツ

When we learn a language, we often think we need big progress to feel motivated. But real improvement comes from small wins.

言語を学ぶとき、私たちはよく「大きな進歩がないとやる気が出ない」と思いがちです。でも、本当の上達は小さな成功（スモールウィン）から生まれます。

A small win is something easy that you can learn today and use today. It doesn’t need to take a long time, but it can help you move forward.

小さな成功とは、今日学んで今日使える、簡単なことのことです。長い時間をかける必要はありませんが、少しずつ前に進むのに役立ちます。

Here’s one small win for Japanese English learners:

日本人の英語学習者への小さな成功のヒントです：

Try to stop adding “-o” to the end of English words.

Japanese words usually end with a vowel sound, but English words often end with a consonant sound. If you add “-o,” the word can sound unnatural in English.

英語の単語の最後に「-o」をつけないようにしましょう。

日本語の単語はたいてい母音で終わりますが、英語の単語は子音で終わることが多いです。「-o」をつけると、英語では不自然に聞こえることがあります。

For example:

•good (gu-d) 〇→ not グッド (guddo) → often pronounced “good-o” X

•start (star-t) 〇→ not スタート (sutāto) → often pronounced “start-o” X

•hot (ho-t) 〇→ not ホット (hotto) → often pronounced “hot-o” X

The trick is to stop and close your mouth when you get to the last letter (consonant). Think about the way you pronounceです– you don’t say the last ‘u’ sound.

コツは、単語の最後の文字（子音）まで言ったら口を閉じることです。

日本語の「です」の発音を思い出してください – 最後の「う」は言いませんよね。

To practise, try this simple exercise:

1.Say the word slowly: good

2.Close your mouth at the end when you get to the ‘d’ sound

3.Stop there, don’t add an extra ‘o’ vowel sound.

練習してみましょう。簡単なエクササイズです：

1.単語をゆっくり言ってみましょう：good

2.最後の「d」の音まで言ったら口を閉じます

3.そこで止めて、「o」の母音を余分につけないようにします

I understand it feels strange at first. Try and practice saying each of these words 5 times:

Good / Start / Hot / Cat / Boat

最初は少し変に感じるかもしれません。次の単語をそれぞれ5回ずつ練習してみましょう：

You don’t need to be perfect. Just practising this for one minute a day is a small win. When you notice even a tiny improvement, your motivation goes up. You feel happy, and you want to learn more. English becomes easier step by step. Small wins can take you a long way.

完璧である必要はありません。1日1分だけでも練習することは、小さな成功です。少しでも上手になったことに気づくと、やる気が上がります。楽しい気持ちになり、もっと学びたくなります。英語は少しずつ簡単になっていきます。小さな成功の積み重ねが、大きな力になります。
