Why Many English Learners Study for Years but Still Feel Shy Speaking

Shirin RJ

Many English learners tell me the same thing:
“I understand grammar, but when I need to speak, my mind goes blank.”

This is a very common experience, and in my years of teaching, I’ve seen that the problem is usually not vocabulary or grammar. The real problem is that many learners don’t know how to organize their thoughts while speaking.

In traditional learning, students often study rules, complete exercises, and memorize words. However, real communication requires more than knowledge — it requires practice in using English in real situations, with guidance and feedback.

In my lessons, I focus on helping students communicate step by step. Instead of random conversation, we work on:

  • expressing ideas clearly

  • choosing natural expressions

  • responding confidently in real situations

I guide students during speaking practice and give gentle, clear feedback so they can improve without feeling stressed or embarrassed.

When students understand how to speak — not just what to say — their confidence grows naturally. Speaking becomes less scary and more enjoyable.

If you feel that you have studied English but still struggle to speak comfortably, this approach may help you move forward.
