Thank you 2025! Here's to a joyful new year

Weekly Topic: Goodbye, 2025! A letter to my students (and myself)

Celine DB

Looking back on 2025, it was a really fun year.

Japanese culture has become very popular in my country, South Africa, and I am a big fan of anime and Japanese food. There were many different events that occurred during the year in my city that celebrated Japanese and other Asian cultures.

I had the opportunity to watch the Demon Slayer Infinity Castle movie. It was sold out and many people dressed up as their favourite characters. I even won a prize for my cosplay! I attended a similar event as well for the new Jujutsu Kaisen movie which I really enjoyed.

There is also an annual "Japan Day" festival in my city where I was able to enjoy some mochi and onigiri, learn more about Japanese history, and take part in activities such as learning Japanese caligraphy and how to play Go.

Here is a photo I took at Japan Day:

Being a freelance worker, sometimes I struggle with stress and anxiety, but this year really taught me that it’s important to make time for your hobbies and passions, and having something to look forward to can bring you a lot of joy and keep you motivated. The year was filled with many memorable events and these were some of the major highlights.

I love learning about and experiencing different cultures and I look forward to attending more events like this in 2026, as well as meeting many new students!
