Magical Movies with a Lesson

Weekly Topic: What movie or book influenced you the most in your life?

Ann K

The movies Wicked and Wicked for Good are highly enjoyable for many reasons.  The glorious costumes and show-stopping theater tunes are enough to transport anyone to a colorful, magical, world where music abounds.  However, beyond the magic, music, and pageantry there is another reason to love Wicked and Wicked for Good.  The reason is that they provide food for thought and grant us perspective.

Anyone who knows the original story of The Wizard of Oz (which is the basis for both Wicked and Wicked for Good) knows that the main character, Elphalba, was originally the villain of the story. In Wicked and Wicked for Good, a well-known tale is told from a different perspective.  The "good" characters from the original story are seen as complex characters in shades of gray while the "evil" character is shown as a heroine in her own right.

Wicked and Wicked for Good show us that both in Oz and in the real world there are many perspectives.  If you see either (or both) of these movies, you'll enjoy the costumes and songs and all of the magic, but you also may find yourself comparing the world of Oz to the world beyond.
