I'm back!

I haven’t written anything here since last November, so it feels a little weird (but also good) to be back at it! Unfortunately, my wife fell ill last year and we had to spend a lot of time at the hospital, so I didn’t have much time or energy for other things. I’m happy to say that, against the odds, she has recovered without needing heart surgery, for which we are both very thankful. Now, at long last, our lives can start getting back to normal, and it feels like there is a lot to catch up on!

Last Christmas was spent quietly at home as we could not travel, and New Year’s came and went in a similarly subdued manner, so I hope to be able to finally meet with some friends and family in February for some much-delayed celebrations. I also received over a dozen books for Christmas, so I have an awful lot of reading to catch up on! And, at last, I can finally start thinking about goals and plans for 2026. Several people have asked about my New Year’s resolutions, but they are still very much a work in progress. It would be nice to get back to Japan for a visit this year, but those plans are still up in the air. All I can say for now is that I hope 2026 is better than 2025 was, and hopefully I can get back to writing more regular (and more useful) articles in the near future!

to be back at s.t. - to return to a previous activity, state, or place, often after a break, or to resume something familiar

to fall ill - to get sick

against the odds - succeeding or achieving something despite it being very unlikely

at long last - finally, after much delay

in a subdued manner - in a quiet, restrained, or calm way

an awful lot of - a very large amount of; a great deal of

a work in progress - a project that is not yet finished; something that is still being developed or worked on

up in the air - (of a plan or issue) unresolved, undecided, or uncertain
