English Idioms Challenge - Week 3

Miss Ren.

Hey all! This is the third weekly English learning challenge: to try & use this idiom in your next lesson, study session, or in a natural conversation!

Please check out my other columns for the first week, which has an explanation of why I think idioms are important to learn. Let's jump into today's idiom:

(to) add insult to injury

meaning: to make a bad situation worse

usage: when another awful thing happens after something terrible has already happened.

image: Imagine two samurai fighting. One loses, gaining a cut on his shoulder. The winner walks over & says, "You were never that good." OR: the bad things are stacking up like bricks, and the insult brick adds to the injury brick & topples it over.

Examples:
  • Not only did I not get the job after the interview, to add insult to injury they told me to completely redo my portfolio!
  • Yeah, I made an honest mistake, but to add insult to injury they put up a "Do Not Do" poster! It was obviously because of what I did!
