Daily English Upgrade #009: Micro-Pattern — “What I mean is…”

Mohamed Helmy

Great when you want to clarify (and sound calm).

Pattern:
What I mean is + (clarification).

Examples:

  • What I mean is, we should start small.
  • What I mean is, not today—maybe next week.
  • What I mean is, the goal is quality, not speed.

Mini practice (20 seconds):
Finish this twice (two different endings):
What I mean is, ______.

It’s much easier to make this natural when you practice it in real conversation. If you’d like, we can work on it together in a 25-minute lesson (supportive corrections, no pressure).
