鎌倉のシンボルである「鎌倉大仏」。この大仏様がなぜ外にいるのか、ご存知でしょうか？もともとは立派な「大仏殿（建物）」の中に安置されていました。しかし、14世紀と15世紀に相次いだ台風や大津波によって建物が倒壊し、それ以来、約500年以上も野ざらしの状態で立ち続けています。潮風や雨にさらされる厳しい環境下で、この巨大な青銅の像を守り続けるには、莫大な手間と費用がかかります。2016年には最新の科学技術を用いた大規模な調査と清掃が行われ、耐震性の補強も施されました。その膨大なメンテナンス費用はどこから来ているのでしょうか？主な資金源は、拝観料や「胎内拝観（大仏の中に入ること）」の収益、そして世界中からの寄付です。特に、一人50円という少額で大仏の中に入れる体験は、観光客に「参加型」の価値を提供しながら、維持費を支えています。

The “Great Buddha of Kamakura” is a symbol of the city. Do you know why this Buddha statue stands outdoors? Originally, it was enshrined inside a magnificent hall called the “Daibutsuden.” However, the building was destroyed by powerful typhoons and a great tsunami in the 14th and 15th centuries. Since then, the statue has stood in the open air for more than 500 years.
Protecting this enormous bronze statue under harsh conditions—exposed to sea winds and rain—requires tremendous effort and cost. In 2016, a large-scale scientific survey and cleaning were conducted using the latest technology, and seismic reinforcements were added.
Where does the funding for such extensive maintenance come from? The main sources are admission fees, revenue from entering inside the statue (known as “Tainai Haikan”), and donations from around the world. In particular, the experience of entering the Buddha for a small fee of 50 yen offers visitors a sense of participation while helping support preservation costs.
