Conquering Interview Stress

Nenad S.

Let's be honest, job interviews are stressful in any language. In English? That stress can feel multiplied. You know exactly what you want to say, but the words come out in the wrong order, you forget a key phrase, or you freeze when someone asks, "So, tell me about yourself."

The good news? Interview nerves are almost entirely about preparation. The more you've rehearsed, the quieter those nerves become. Here are some tips that actually work.

Start with "Tell me about yourself" and nail it. This is the most common opening question, and yet most candidates wing it. Don't. Prepare a 90 second structured answer: who you are professionally, what you've done, and why you're excited about this role. Practice it until it feels natural, not memorized.

Learn the STAR method. Behavioral questions like "Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult colleague" are everywhere. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. Structure your stories this way and you'll always sound clear and confident — even under pressure.

It's okay to pause. Native speakers do it too. When you get a tough question, it's completely professional to say, "That's a great question - let me think for a moment." A short pause looks thoughtful, not lost.

Prepare questions to ask them. Interviews are two-way conversations. Have 2–3 smart questions ready, like "What does success look like in this role in the first 90 days?" It shows genuine interest and gives you a moment to breathe.

Record yourself. It sounds painful, but watching yourself answer questions on video reveals habits you'd never notice otherwise - filler words, eye contact, pace. One session of this is worth hours of silent practice.

I've sat on both sides of the interview table. I know what interviewers are actually thinking when a candidate hesitates, rambles, or gives a vague answer. That perspective is something you won't get from a tips article.
