English Idioms Challenge - Week 13

Miss Ren.

Hey all! Welcome back to a column dedicated to English idioms!

This time, I'm sharing some idioms that are based on numbers.

Let's jump into today's idioms:

24/7
meaning: 24 hours in a day; 7 days a week

usage: constantly; always

Examples:
  • People say you should leave your work at work. But I think about it 24/7.
  • After I broke my foot, it didn't hurt 24/7. But it definitely hurt when I put pressure on it.

at the eleventh hour
meaning: at the last minute; at the last possible moment

usage: when something is started, acted on, or finished just in time

Examples:
  • I'm something of a procrastinator. I always finish things at the eleventh hour.
  • Don't start this report at the eleventh hour; this assignment will take upwards of 20 hours of work.

(back to) square one
meaning: going back to the beginning

usage: when someone has to restart a project, try something over again, or relearning the fundamentals

Examples:
  • I should go back to square one 'cause I can't understand this next step.
  • So that approach didn't work! Let's go back to square one and try a different method.
Please feel free to schedule a "Homework Help" lesson! I get back to you in 24-48 hours!
