This time, I'm sharing some idioms that are based on numbers.
Let's jump into today's idioms:
one in a million
meaning: someone or something that's very special; extremely lucky or rare situation or experience
usage: an extremely high compliment meaning something is extraordinary, rare, or unique. It's almost always positive!
Examples:
- I feel like I've just won the lottery! This is a one in a million experience.
- You're truly one in a million. Thank you so much for helping me at the last minute!
(to) put two and two together
meaning: to connect facts or information together to see the whole.
usage: figuring out a puzzle, riddle, or a complicated series of facts, events, or situations
Examples:
- Oh! I've put two and two together. She couldn't have done the crime because she wasn't in the area when it happened!
- So I think he's put two and two together regarding his birthday. He's noticed me looking up cake recipes and finds it weird that all of his friends are busy that day...
ten to one
meaning: something that is very likely to happen
usage: when you feel very confident in the outcome of an event; when something is going to happen unless something serious disrupts it
Examples:
- I'd bet ten to one that she's going to be proposed to on that trip she's taking. She's even gone and done her nails!
- Ten to one, we'll finish this project on time. We're ahead of schedule & we've got two weeks!
