Speak Better English: Rise and Shine!
Morning routines • Daily habits • Productivity

How you spend your first hour awake can set the tone for your entire day. Whether you are an early bird or someone who usually wakes up feeling groggy, building a simple routine is a total game-changer.

My Morning: Keeping It Simple

For me, having a peaceful morning is completely non-negotiable. Instead of choosing to hit the snooze button multiple times, I try to wake up on the right side of the bed by doing a five-minute stretch as soon as I stand up.

Next, I make a fresh cup of coffee to kickstart my brain. I also try to incorporate a short walk outside to get some fresh air. It really helps me clear my head before I sit down to check emails and organise classes for the day.

Start Small!
You don't need a two-hour routine. Just picking one positive habit (like drinking a glass of water before checking your phone) can help you rise and shine with much more energy!
Mini-dialogues:

Scenario 1: The struggle to wake up
A: “You look so awake! I'm still feeling really groggy today.”
B: “Thanks! I've been trying to become an early bird.”
A: “How do you do it? I always hit the snooze button.”
B: “I put my alarm across the room so I have to get out of bed.”
A: “That's smart. I need a new habit to kickstart my day.”
B: “Try it tomorrow! It really helps you rise and shine.”
Scenario 2: Creating a new routine
A: “I want to start a morning routine, but I don't have time.”
B: “It doesn't have to be long. Just five minutes can set the tone.”
A: “What kind of habits do you incorporate into your morning?”
B: “I drink a glass of water and read a few pages of a book.”
A: “That sounds peaceful. I usually just check my phone in bed.”
B: “If you change that, you'll feel like you woke up on the right side of the bed.”
Scenario 3: Mental clarity
A: “Why do you always go for a walk before work?”
B: “It really helps me clear my head before a busy day begins.”
A: “Aren't you too tired to exercise that early?”
B: “Not at all. For me, getting some fresh air is non-negotiable.”
A: “Maybe I should try walking instead of drinking three coffees.”
B: “You definitely should! It's a great way to wake up.”
Scenario 4: Staying consistent
A: “Have you kept up with your new morning habits?”
B: “Yes! I haven't wanted to hit the snooze button all week.”
A: “Wow, you really did turn into an early bird.”
B: “It was tough at first, but now I don't feel groggy anymore.”
A: “I'm jealous. My mornings are always so rushed and stressful.”
B: “You just need to find one small habit to kickstart your routine.”

  • Do you usually hit the snooze button, or do you wake up immediately?
