Acknowledgement from Yokota High School!

I’m truly honored and grateful to be part of the YHS family, and I genuinely appreciate being selected to represent both Yokota High School and Japan in this special acknowledgment. Receiving recognition from my high school and the alumni association means more to me than words can fully express. It brought back so many wonderful memories of growing up in Japan while attending an all-American school surrounded by other military families and “military brats” like myself. There was something incredibly unique and special about that experience that shaped who I am today.

Living in Japan gave us the opportunity to grow up between two worlds. We attended American schools, spoke English with our friends, celebrated American holidays, and shared many aspects of American culture together, yet outside the gates we were immersed in the beauty, kindness, traditions, and everyday life of Japan. It truly felt like the perfect blend of East and West. Many of us developed a deep appreciation for both cultures, and those experiences taught us adaptability, open-mindedness, and respect for people from different backgrounds.

Some of my happiest memories come from simply growing up alongside friends who understood that unique lifestyle — moving frequently, adapting quickly, and creating lifelong friendships in a place far from what many people considered “home.” Even now, there is a special bond among those of us who shared that experience. Japan was more than just where we lived; it became part of our identity, our memories, and our hearts.

I wanted to share this acknowledgment because it means so much to me personally. I will always carry pride and gratitude for my time at Yokota High School and for the incredible people, friendships, and experiences that helped shape my life. Thank you again for this meaningful honor and for allowing me to remain connected to such a wonderful community.

Yokota High School ファミリーの一員でいられることを心から光栄に思い、また横田高校と日本の両方を代表してこの特別な表彰を受けられたことに、心から感謝しています。母校と同窓会からの評価は、言葉では言い尽くせないほど私にとって大きな意味があります。日本で育ち、他の軍関係の家族や、私と同じ「ミリタリー・ブラット」に囲まれながら、全米式の学校に通っていた日々の素晴らしい思い出が一気によみがえりました。あの経験には、私という人間を形づくった、信じられないほどユニークで特別な何かがありました。

日本での暮らしは、二つの世界のはざまで育つ機会を与えてくれました。私たちはアメリカの学校に通い、友人とは英語で話し、アメリカの祝日を祝い、アメリカ文化の多くを分かち合っていましたが、ゲートの外に出れば、日本の美しさ、優しさ、伝統、そして日々の暮らしにどっぷり浸っていました。本当に東洋と西洋の完璧な融合のように感じられました。多くの私たちは両方の文化に深い敬意と愛着を育み、その経験から、適応力、開かれた心、そして異なる背景を持つ人々への敬意を学びました。

私の最も幸せな記憶のいくつかは、その独特のライフスタイル——頻繁な引っ越し、素早い適応、そして多くの人が「故郷」と考える場所から遠く離れた地で一生ものの友情を育むこと——を理解してくれる友人たちと一緒に成長できたことから生まれました。今でも、その経験を共有した者同士の間には特別な絆があります。日本は、ただの居住地ではありませんでした。私たちのアイデンティティ、思い出、そして心の一部になったのです。

この表彰を共有したかったのは、私個人にとって計り知れない意味があるからです。横田高校で過ごした時間、そして私の人生を形づけてくれた素晴らしい人々、友情、経験に対して、私はこれからもずっと誇りと感謝を抱き続けます。このように意義深い名誉を与えてくださり、また素晴らしいコミュニティとつながり続けることを許してくださって、本当にありがとうございます。
