Read Aloud, Speak Better!

Njoki A.

Did you know that one of the easiest ways to improve your English speaking fluency is simply by reading out loud?

Studies show that students who read aloud regularly:
- Speak faster and more smoothly (Lancaster University, 2020)
- Make fewer pauses and hesitations (ScienceDirect, 2023)
- Improve pronunciation and confidence (Journal of ELT, 2020)

Why does it work? Because reading aloud helps you practice pronunciation, rhythm and intonation without the pressure of “thinking on the spot.” It’s like training your mouth and brain to work together.

Try this: Pick a short article or story, read it aloud for 10 minutes, then talk about what you read. You’ll notice your speaking feels more natural.

If you’d like to experience the benefits of reading aloud in a supportive, interactive space, come join my Read Aloud & Discuss lessons on Cafetalk. Together, we’ll explore engaging texts, practice reading aloud and then dive into meaningful discussions that strengthen both your comprehension and your speaking fluency.

Whether you’re aiming to improve pronunciation, gain confidence or simply enjoy learning through stories, these lessons are designed to help you grow step by step. I look forward to reading and speaking with you!
