How I Study When I Do Not Feel Motivated

Miklos

Hello everyone!

Today, I want to write about motivation.

Sometimes I feel motivated to study or learn something new. I feel curious. I have energy. I want to improve.

But to be honest, I don't always feel that way.

Sometimes I am tired after work. Sometimes I have many things on my mind. Sometimes I know I should study, but I would rather relax, watch something on TV, or scroll through my phone.

I think this is normal. We do not have to feel motivated every day.

The important question is this...

What can we do when we want to study, but we don't feel like studying?

I start with a very small goal

When I do not feel motivated, I try not to make a big plan. I don't tell myself, “I need to study for two hours.”

That sounds difficult before I even begin.

Instead, I choose a small goal.

For example...

  • read one page
  • study for five minutes
  • learn three new words
  • watch one short video
  • review one old lesson
  • write two or three sentences

A small goal feels easy to start. And starting is often the hardest part. Sometimes I study for only five minutes and stop. That's okay. It's better than nothing.

But sometimes, after five minutes, I feel more focused and continue for longer.

I make studying easy to begin

I also try to remove small obstacles.

For example, if I want to read, I leave my book somewhere easy to see. If I want to study vocabulary, I keep my notes nearby. If I want to watch something educational, I choose the video before I sit down.

These things sound simple, but they help me a lot.

When I'm tired, even a small extra step can become an excuse not to start.

So I try to make studying as easy as possible.

I do not wait for the perfect mood

This is something I have learned over time...

Motivation usually comes after we begin, not before.

Sometimes I wait for the perfect moment.

I think...

I will study when I have more energy.

I will start when I have more time.

I will do it tomorrow.

But the perfect moment hardly ever comes. So I try to begin even when I don't feel ready. I may not do my best work every time. But doing a little is better than doing nothing.

I choose something enjoyable

Studying does not always need to feel serious. Sometimes I choose an easier or more enjoyable activity.

For example...

  • listening to a song I like
  • watching a short video
  • reading about a topic I'm interested in
  • learning useful phrases
  • reviewing something I already understand
  • talking about my day in simple sentences in Japanese

This is especially helpful when studying a language. You do not always need to open a difficult textbook. Watching a short video, reading a menu, or writing a few lines about your day can also be useful practice.

I try not to be too hard on myself

Of course, some days are difficult. Sometimes I am too tired to study. Sometimes I skip a day. I try not to feel guilty about that.

Rest is also important.

The goal is not to be perfect. The goal is to continue. If I miss one day, I try to start again the next day with a small goal.

That is enough.

Small steps are powerful

When we look at one day, five minutes of study may not feel important. But small actions add up over time. Five minutes can become ten minutes. Three new words can become thirty words. One short conversation can make the next conversation easier.

Little by little, we improve.

A small challenge for you

Here is a simple challenge...

The next time you do not feel motivated to study English, do something small. Study for just five minutes. Read one paragraph. Learn one phrase. Write one sentence. Say something out loud.

You don't need to do everything. Just do something.

That small step is more powerful than you think.

Thanks for reading!
