Sri Lanka is very famous for its delicious food, but did you know that you can also learn useful English vocabulary through Sri Lankan dishes?
Today I would like to introduce 7 English words that are often used when talking about food.
1. Spicy
Meaning: Food with a strong, hot flavor from spices or chili.
Example sentence: "Sri Lankan curry is usually very spicy."
If you enjoy food with chili and spices, you might love Sri Lankan dishes.
2. Coconut
Meaning: A large tropical fruit with white flesh and sweet water inside.
Example sentence: "Many Sri Lankan curry dishes contain coconut."
Coconut milk and grated/ shredded coconut are very important ingredients in our cooking.
3. Curry
Meaning: A dish made with meat, fish etc. vegetables, and spices in a sauce.

There are many different types of curry, and most families have its own recipes.
4. Fresh
Meaning: Recently made, picked, or prepared.
Example sentence: "I prefer fresh fruit juice with breakfast."
Fresh ingredients like fruits can be very delicious!
5. Traditional
Meaning: Following customs or practices from the past.
Example sentence: "Hoppers are a traditional Sri Lankan food."
Many traditional dishes and curries are enjoyed by families today.
6. Flavor
Meaning: The taste of a food or drink.
Example sentence: "This curry has a rich flavor."
Different spices like cinnamon or cardamom create different flavors.
7. Street Food
Meaning: Food sold by shop owners in public places.
Example sentence: "Street food is a great way to experience local culture in a new country."
Many travelers enjoy trying Sri Lankan street food when they travel around the country.
