The word “bust” has many meanings in English!
As a verb, it can refer (informally) to breaking something, as in “I busted my phone when I dropped it.” (In this sense, it can also be used as an adjective, as in “My phone is busted,” which simply means “My phone is broken.”)
It can also refer to being caught or discovered doing something you shouldn't be doing, such as breaking a rule, lying, or committing a crime, as in “The cops busted him for speeding.”
A person or company can also go bust, meaning “bankrupt,” as in “That company went bust a few years ago.”
As a noun, bust has several more meanings!
It can refer to an artistic sculpture of a person’s head and shoulders or to the chest/breast area of a person, such as for clothing measurements.
Finally, in economics, a bust is a recession, crash, or downturn in financial markets (the opposite is a boom), and when bust is used to talk about events or projects, it refers to a total failure or disappointment, as in “Almost no one showed up, so the concert was a total bust.”
