The Art of the Micro-Vacation: Bringing the Holiday Spirit Home

Howard

Think about your day-to-day life. You work hard, manage the home, and carefully save your money. All for what? That coveted holiday—whether it’s a week, two weeks, ten days, or just a long weekend. The moment you arrive at your destination, something shifts. You unwind. You try new foods because they are available, visit places you’ve never been, and do things you’d never dream of doing at home.

But then, you return. You tell everyone how much you enjoyed it, and immediately slide right back into the routine of work and home life, striving and saving for the next getaway.

Have you ever thought about slowing down a little bit right in your own hometown? Think back to how families handled things in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Growing up in those decades, money was often tight and long vacations weren't always an option. Instead, people found what was close by. They looked for local adventures and asked, "Where can we go that is different? What can we do?"

It wasn’t until I moved to the countryside two and a half years ago that my own life started to slow down naturally. I began to ask myself: Where can I go right now that will make me feel like I’m on holiday?

That's when I discovered two beautiful spots just a 40-minute drive from my home, like Wistaston, where I can simply sit, have a coffee, eat some lunch, visit the ice cream parlor, and just relax and do nothing more. It feels exactly like being on vacation, and it is amazing. I also explored a town just 20 minutes away and realized every town has different elements to it. I started walking, exploring areas like the plazas, and just sitting to watch people and enjoy the day.

It’s incredible how we forget that even though we are working hard and living our busy lives, we are allowed to do absolutely nothing on our days off. We can enjoy what is right around us, or travel a short distance by car and explore a place we’ve never been.

When I do this, I treat it exactly like a holiday—but without the hassle of packing, airport parking, or flying. It is literally just going for a day, but the energy it creates in your mind because it relaxes you is wonderful.

A Little Challenge For You...

Try it this week! Take a day off in your own location—where you live and work—and go somewhere nearby you’ve never thought to explore. Sit down, forget about everything, and just enjoy the day the way you would if you were on vacation.

Let’s chat about it! In our next class, I would love to hear all about your local adventure and how you enjoyed doing something new in your own backyard. Book a session with me today, and let's practice your English while sharing our favorite ways to slow down!
