Beyond the Textbooks: How Reading Sparked My Love for Learning

주간 토픽: What I enjoyed learning as a student

Njoki A.

Hello, lovely learners!

Welcome back to my column. This week, we are diving into a really fun topic: what I enjoyed learning most back when I was a student.

When I look back at my school days, I’ll let you in on a little secret: I was never a huge fan of dry theory or memorizing endless rules. Sitting at a desk copying notes? Not quite my cup of tea! Instead, I was a naturally curious student who wanted to explore things that made my world feel bigger. I wanted to learn things that sparked my imagination.

My Ultimate School Obsession: The Great Novel Race

For me, the real magic didn't happen in a textbook. It happened inside the pages of novels.

I was absolutely deep into reading fictional worlds, to the point where my friends and I turned it into a sport. We didn't just read; we competed!

We would spend our breaks debating character choices, predicting endings and racing to the school library to grab the next sequel.

Through these friendly competitions, I wasn't just passing the time. Without even realizing it, I was learning:

  • New vocabulary in a way that actually stuck.

  • Creative writing structures and how to build suspense.

  • Empathy and perspective, by stepping into the shoes of characters from entirely different worlds.

The Homework Loophole

Now, being so lost in fictional worlds did have one hilarious side effect: I would often completely forget to do my actual school assignments!

My mind was so busy traveling through middle-earth or solving detective cases that homework slipped right through the cracks. But somehow, I always got a free pass from my English teacher. Because of all the reading I was doing, my writing, vocabulary and comprehension skills had skyrocketed. I became so good at English that my teacher would just smile and let my missing homework slide, knowing that my "accidental" study method was actually working wonders!

This taught me that learning is at its best when it feels like an adventure, not a chore.
Bring Your Imagination to Our Lessons!

I believe language learning shouldn't feel like memorizing a dusty grammar textbook. In my lessons, we focus on interactive, engaging and practical learning that keeps your brain active and your imagination firing. Whether we are discussing a great story, practicing real-life conversations or exploring new ideas, we'll make sure it's anything but boring.

Over to You!

Now, I want to hear from you!

  • What did you actually enjoy learning when you were a student?

  • Were you a science experiment lover, a history buff, a sports champion or a fellow bookworm?

Leave a comment below and share your favorite student memories!

And if you're ready to make your language-learning journey a fun, interactive adventure, book a lesson with me today. Let’s explore, chat and learn together!
