Fun Things to Do During Summer Vacation

Miklos

Hello everyone!

Recently, I had a great lunch with some friends and my sons here in Sendai.

We went to a fantastic beef tongue restaurant.

If you know Sendai, you probably know that beef tongue is one of the city’s most famous foods. It was delicious, and it was also nice to spend time with good friends and family.

That lunch made me think about summer vacation.

For me, summer is not only about big trips or expensive plans. Some of the best summer memories come from simple things: good food, family time, laughter, and small adventures close to home.

Here are some fun things I always enjoy doing during summer vacation.

Go to the water park

Every summer, I like taking my sons to a nearby water park.

It is a great way to cool down, move around, and have fun together.

Of course, it can be crowded, and the sun can be very strong. But when everyone is laughing, swimming, and playing in the water, it feels like real summer.

For children, a water park is super exciting.

For parents, it is a little tiring!

But it is always worth it.

Go to a Rakuten Eagles baseball game

Another thing I enjoy is going to Rakuten Eagles baseball games.

Baseball games in Japan have such a fun atmosphere.

You can watch the game, cheer with the fans, eat stadium food, and enjoy being outside in the evening. Plus during August they have a swimming pool for kids that even has a waterfall, fireworks, and the usual carnival rides that we always love.

Even if you do not know every rule of baseball, going to a game can still be a great experience.

It feels lively, local, and very “summer.”

Eat shaved ice

Summer would not feel complete without shaved ice.

My sons and I love eating it on hot days. For some reason their favorite flavor is Blue Hawaii. I always get the melon one.

There is something very simple and happy about shaved ice. It is cold, sweet, colorful, and refreshing.

Of course, it melts quickly, so you have to eat fast!

For me, shaved ice is one of those small summer treats that always makes the day feel better.

Have a barbecue and fireworks at home

Another favorite summer activity is having an evening barbecue at home.

After the sun starts to go down, it feels a little cooler. We cook outside, eat together, and enjoy the relaxed summer evening.

Then, after dinner, we sometimes do fireworks in our driveway.

Nothing too big or dangerous, of course.

Just simple fireworks with the kids.

The smell of barbecue, the sound of cicadas, and the little sparks from fireworks all feel very nostalgic to me.

Those moments are simple, but they become wonderful memories.

Go to the movie theater

And of course, we have to go to the movie theater.

Why?

Because the air conditioner is always set to super cool!

On a really hot summer day, a movie theater feels like paradise.

You can sit in a comfortable seat, enjoy some popcorn, watch a movie, and escape the heat for a couple of hours.

Sometimes summer fun means being active outside.

Sometimes it means hiding from the sun in a very cold movie theater.

Both are good!

Make your own summer list

You do not need a perfect vacation plan to enjoy summer.

You can make a simple summer list.

For example...
  • eat one summer food you love
  • go somewhere with water
  • watch a movie
  • visit a local event
  • have dinner outside
  • take a walk in the evening
  • try one new place near your home

Small plans can make summer feel special.

For English learners, this is also a good conversation topic.

You can practice saying:

“This summer, I want to…”
“Every summer, I usually…”
“My favorite summer activity is…”
“I’m looking forward to…”

Summer vacation can be busy, hot, and sometimes tiring.

But it can also be full of small happy moments.

I hope you find your own fun ways to enjoy the season.

Thanks for reading!
