Summer Scary Stories: Horror as a Genre

In the United States, we typically associate spooky season with the month of October, as that is when we celebrate Halloween. However, in other parts of the world, spooky season falls in the late summer time. It is a time to share scary stories around a campfire, explore haunted locations, and embrace spookiness!

I am offering a seasonal lesson that talks about horror as a genre. In this lesson we will talk about why horror exists across the cultures of the world, the differences in eastern and western horror, and what the different types of horror are. All the while we will be learning some fun vocabulary related to the topic. It is intended to be a fun and laidback lesson.

Now, that being said, I thought I'd share a spooky story that I grew up with, about a

woman called Dolly Mammy who became a ghost. There are different variations of the story as it has been around the area for a while.
This link leads to a site called Williamsburg Yorktown Daily, which is a news site for the area of Virginia (my home state) that I am originally from. It has a copy of the story for you to read. Warning, the story does involve death and hauntings, so reader discretion is advised.
